I have sent a test email to my instant direct message forwarding address and it has now shown up on my iphone. Am I not using this feature correctly?

    Hi tim,

Did you send a test DM or a test e-mail? Regular e-mail's will not be forwarded.

I'm not sure I understand instant direct messages.
Doesn't boxcar already forward my DM's to me.

What is the advantage of forwarding the DM's that are emailed, to my email address, to the boxcar instant direct message address?

    Hey Tim,

The advantage is that you will recieve the notification within a few
seconds rather than having to wait until our servers poll your
account. Polling takes place about every 3-5 minutes.

    Hi Jonathan,

I reset up my gmail to only forward direct message emails from twitter to my boxcar forwarding address that i find in the boxcar app under Instant Direct Messages.

    I get the following error:

Delivery to the following recipient has been delayed:

    <myuniqueid>@push.boxcar.io

Message will be retried for 1 more day(s)

    Technical details of temporary failure:
Connection was dropped by remote host (SENT_MESSAGE)

    Hi.

I have the same problem. It seems that my @push.boxcar.io> doesn't exist.

Same to me here, I get a failure notification when forwarding to my push.boxcar.io address.

For me, the problem is that GMail wants to verify the account I'm forwarding mail to...
It keeps sending confirmation emails to @push.boxcar.io, but I don't receive these emails (if I got it right, only emails from twitter are pushed to the device...) and can't enter the confirmation code into GMail, hence it doesn't allow forwarding to that address.

Well, how did you guys set up the forwarding? :-)

Quite simple. Open GMail, click on settings and select filters. Create a new filter.

From: is twitter-dm-xxx=yyy.zzz@postmaster.twitter.com, where xxx=yyy.zzz is the email address twitter is sending you the direct messages to, It's normally xxx@yyy.zzz but since you cannot have the @ twice in an email address twitter is replacing your @ with a =.

To: is just your email address xxx@yyy.zzz, this isn't really neccessary, but I like to fill it in anyways.

Subject: is Direct Message. Again this isn't neccessary still I like to fill it in.

The rest of the fields are empty, unless you want to be more specific about what to get instantly pushed about and what not.

On the next step I usually choose the following checkboxes:

    • Skip the Inbox (Archive it) - I don't want those DMs in my Inbox, I read them on the iPod, right?
    • Mark as read - again, I don't want any other program thinking I got a new mail.
    • Apply the label - I like to keep them together under a Direct Message label, so in case something gets wrong I still have the mail.
    • Forward it to - Here goes you <unique-id>@push.boxcar.io.
    • Never send it to Spam - DMs can only be sent by people you also follow, right? So, since your probably selective about whom you follow I don't suppose they will ever spam you.

    Hope it helps,
    Jan

Jan, thanks for the detailed instructions! Yet this is where it all ends:
Forward it to - Here goes you <unique-id>@push.boxcar.io.

I've attached some screenshots to illustrate the problem.

    • In the process of creating the filter, I cannot check Forward it to, because "I have no verified forwarding addresses".
    • Clicking the link Manage your forwarding addresses brings me to the Forwarding and POP/IMAP settings tab, where I can indeed add a forwarding address.
    • After adding <unique-id>@push.boxcar.io, I am told to verify the email address by entering a code that GMail sent there.
    • I don't receive this e-mail → I can't enter the code → I can't use this feature.

How can it be that I'm the only GMail user asked to verify an email address before using it as a forward address??

You are in the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab under settings, but you have to go to the Filters tab.

The very first screenshot is from the Filters tab!
As you can see, I can't select to Forward it to there, nor can I enter a forwarding address.
Instead, I am sent to the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab to add a forwarding address, which I cannot add because of the required verification code.

See the dilemma? I can filter E-Mails from Twitter, but I can't forward them to Boxcar because I can't verify the Boxcar email address.

Try importing the xml file, I made a generic filter and exported it.

Wow, thanks a lot. Close, but...
GMail simply informs me that the forwarding address I'm about to import hasn't been verified and I can't import the filter!!!!

Either I have to give up or Boxcar has to fix this.
Seriously, am I the only one whose GMail account is overly protective??
Any comment from the support staff?

    Sebastian,

We'll investigate the newly added confirmation code tonight. We just
added the same capability for Yahoo a few days ago
    (http://blog.boxcar.io/post/433207947/new-yahoo-mail-forwarding).

In the meantime - could you send an example confirmation code to
support@boxcar.io? Just use that for the forwarding address, so Gmail
    sends one to it.

That way we'll have exactly what we need to extract the code from it.

    best,
    j

I just did a small research :D on the GMail support site. Actually it's quite the opposite of what you assume. I am not sure why it's working for me. The support site exactly explains what happens to you and it reads like it should happen this way always.

Maybe because I am a european (german to be exact) user of GMail it's why I can use the feature and you cannot. I know that there's some difference between the GMail service in different countries.

Haha, I'm from Munich. What up.
I guess you added the forwarding just before they introduced this verification thing.

Jonathan: I just added support@boxcar.io as a forwarding address, you should've received one of those mysterious verification codes. Feel free to come back to me if I can be of any further assistance.

    Hey Sebastian,

Try forwarding to your unique push e-mail address now. You should
receive a notification that contains the confirmation code you'll need
    to type into Gmail.

If you don't, let me know.

    Jan,

Thanks so much for helping out here. I truly appreciate it. :)

Your welcome. I am happy to help as I am very comfortable with Boxcar, I actually tested all the pushers and Boxcar is by far the one that works the best and is the easiest to use.

But anyways, I'll send you a verification mail from my account as well in a bit, so you have another one to cross check with and, as I stated earlier, it might be different, as I am not sure if GMail sends the same message. I even, though I have to check this, might be able to send you a german verification mail, so you can see an other language as well.

Hey guys, sorry for replying so late.

Jonathan, I tried to add the forwarding again this morning, but didn't receive a notification with my verification code all day.
By the way, it doesn't matter if I set my GMail account to English or German, it doesn't work.

BUT! I solved my problem. I have a second GMail account with the exact same settings as the one I used with Twitter.
And I kid you not, with this other account I can add forwarding addresses without going through this verification crap.
(Jan: both of them are set to German, so that can't be the reason...) So I simply changed my e-mail address registered with Twitter, set it all up and it works like a charm!!!

Yet the problem with GMail's verification system seems to remain unsolved, so I'll be happy to help you test it until it works.
